Nostalgia - Vid clips, stories and links from the 70's, 80's and early 90's
The other day I was sitting and having a conversation with bagman, we were reminiscing about our childhood. As usual, he brought up a great topic. He said, "What ever happened to wax candy?" At the time, I was more concerned with updating (an slightly embellishing my resume on monster), but as the day wore on, I found myself coming back to that very question. What the hell did happen to those sweet and slightly dangerous treats we used to enjoy as kids? I can remember saving change from my lunch money all week, so I could wake up early on saturday morning, go get a hair cut and make that weekly pilgrimage to Mr. Stokes' Service Station And Corner Store. My group of friends and myself would meet up like clockwork, to form a frenzied mob of neighborhood kids, looking to get our sugar fix. We would get in a soup -nazi like line, with small brown paper bags in hand. When it was our time, we would put our little pocket fulls of change on the counter and Mr. Stokes would allow us to fill the bag with all types of assorted goodies. I would make a b-line straight to the cream cookies, boston baked bean candies, Alexander the grapes, lemon heads and bazooka joe gum. However, my favorites by far were the wax lips and wax pop bottles, filled with colored sugar water.
These were the days before little debbies and that high fructose corn syrup crap. What the fuck is soo wrong with sugar anyways? We would run out of the store, giddy like a bunch of school girls, hauling our pre pubescent asses back to our respective homes. We were obsessively eager to enjoy a full day of eating our sugary sweet, teeth rotting booty and watching saturday morning cartoons, 80's style!Later I will post a list of my favorite cartoons, but first take a look at my favorite 80's movies. As always please email me with any suggestions or a list of your favorites that you would like to see posted here.
